1. The summer season is a tough time not only for people but for pets, so it’s better to take your pets for exercise in the early morning or late in the evening as the weather is much cooler at these times compared to rest of the day. Also avoid taking your pet for outings in the car, try keeping them at home. The temperature of car will rise up to 110 degrees even when the windows of the car are opened, so it is quite dangerous for your pet’s health even when the day is not so hot.
2. Make sure that you have with you plenty of water while taking your dogs on a walk on a hot day as they get dehydrated quickly. Hence it is better to avoid taking them on walks on hot days.
3. Be certain about the type of pet you have, because some dogs like Pugs and Persians have short noses and they face difficulties in breathing during the hot weather.
4. If you are planning to go for vacation and your pet cannot go with you then make sure that you find a trusted person who can take care of your pet while you are not home. For this you need to check training references and qualifications. While choosing a kennel for your pet keep in mind to check the cleanliness, security, staff qualifications and veterinary care and do ask the veterinarian for the references from the business.
5. Get regular checkups of your pet. Heatworm disease is very common in summers so test your dogs on regular basis and groomed them properly to prevent fleas and ticks. In addition ask your veterinarian for preventive medications for these diseases.
6. Make sure that your dog wears a collar or tag ID in case of any unfortunate incident it is easier to find your pet if it wears an ID since summer is a busy season for lost pets to shelter.
7. Spaying and neutering of the pets are also very important in hot weather, thus make sure that your pets and your friend’s pets are spayed and neutered.
8. If your pets are in a pool make sure that there is someone who is supervising them as it can be a great disaster if pets are given free access to pools. Moreover while your pets are outdoor, supply them with plenty of water and keep them in the shade so that they can keep themselves cool.
9. You need to lower the temperature of your pet if they get overheated. Thus while lowering the temperature of your pet take them in the shaded region and try to gradually lower their temperature by applying cool water over their body. In addition use cold towels and ice packs on your pet’s head and neck. Also get your pet to drink small amounts of water and allow them to lick ice cubes and take them to veterinarian as soon as possible.
